Enlarge Prostate

Description
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (also called BPH) is a condition that affects the prostate gland in men. The prostate is a gland found between the bladder (where urine is stored) and the urethra (the tube urine passes through). As men age, the prostate gland slowly grows bigger (or enlarges). As the prostate gets bigger, it may press on the urethra and cause the flow of urine to be slower and less forceful. "Benign" means the enlargement isn't caused by cancer or infection. "Hyperplasia" means enlargement.
Root Causes
  • The cause of BPH is not well understood. No definite information on risk factors exists. For centuries, it has been known that BPH occurs mainly in older men and that it doesn't develop in men whose testes were removed before puberty. For this reason, some researchers believe that factors related to aging and the testes may spur the development of BPH.
  • Throughout their lives, men produce testosterone, an important male hormone, and small amounts of estrogen, a female hormone. As men age, the amount of active testosterone in the blood decreases, leaving a higher proportion of estrogen. Studies done on animals have suggested that BPH may occur because the higher amount of estrogen within the gland increases the activity of substances that promote cell growth.
  • Another theory focuses on dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a substance derived from testosterone in the prostate, which may help control its growth. Most animals lose their ability to produce DHT as they age. However, some research has indicated that even with a drop in the blood's testosterone level, older men continue to produce and accumulate high levels of DHT in the prostate. This accumulation of DHT may encourage the growth of cells. Scientists have also noted that men who do not produce DHT do not develop BPH.
  • Some researchers suggest that BPH may develop as a result of "instructions" given to cells early in life. According to this theory, BPH occurs because cells in one section of the gland follow these instructions and "reawaken" later in life. These "reawakened" cells then deliver signals to other cells in the gland, instructing them to grow or making them more sensitive to hormones that influence growth.
Symptoms
  • Waking at night to urinate
  • Sudden and strong urge to urinate.
  • A frequent need to go, sometimes every two hours or less.
  • Pushing or straining to begin.
  • A wake stream.
  • Dribbling after finishing.
  • Feeling the bladder has not completely emptied after finishing.
  • Pain or burning while urinating.
Home Remedies
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine.
  • Avoid liquids within two hours of going to bed, to reduce nighttime urination.
  • Avoid foods of animal origin. They have been linked to BPH.
  • Eat cold water fish or fish oil.
  • Follow a healthy diet.
  • Eat soy (if not allergic).
Precautions

Cut the Caffeine: Caffeine in any form – coffee, tea or chocolate or soft drinks – tends to tighten the bladder neck and make it more difficult to pass urine. Some of the prostate is made up of smooth muscle, and anything that causes that muscle to constrict will make urination more difficult. Caffeine does it quite a bit.

Avoid alcohol: Drinking alcohol makes the bladder operate a lot less efficiently as it tightens the bladder neck to hamper urination. And since it’s a diuretic, it increases the amount of urine that builds up inside the bladder.

Avoid cold medicines: Antihistamines and decongestants can cause even more harm to some men. In fact, taking large does of cold medications occasionally leads to urinary retention – a potentially life-threatening condition in which you completely stop urinating. Antihistamines simply paralyze the bladder.

Be wary of spicy foods: Spicy and acidic foods bother some men with enlarged prostates. If it is noticed some problems after eating salsa, chili or other spicy or acidic foods then you should avoid that cuisine.

Manage your stress: Perhaps the most underrated trigger is unmanaged stress. Stress plays a major role in prostate related discomfort, because the bladder neck and prostate are both very rich with nerves that respond to adrenal hormones. When you are under stress, there are more of these hormones floating around – causing more difficulty in urinating.

Ejaculation: One of the best ways to alleviate urination problem is to have more sex. Ejaculation empties the prostrate secretion that hinders urination.
